Build a Practical Vulnerability Management Program
A vulnerability scan provides findings. A vulnerability management program defines how your organization understands, prioritizes, acts on, and reviews those findings. The goal is a repeatable way to manage risk.
Assess
Establish visibility into the assets and software you support. Identify business owners, critical services, exposure, and scanning coverage. Record gaps so you can distinguish what is known from what still needs investigation.
Prioritize
Consider the asset’s business role, exposure, severity, and available exploitation information together. A score provides one perspective. Business context helps explain which issue deserves attention first and why.
Remediate
Assign an owner and an agreed response timeframe. Select the appropriate action, such as patching, configuration changes, removal, or a compensating control. Follow testing and change procedures, account for maintenance and reboot needs, and document exceptions with appropriate approval.
Monitor
Verify that the action addressed the finding. Review overdue work, accepted risks, recurring issues, and changes in coverage. Keep an operating cadence that gives owners a clear view of what needs attention.
Give the program a foundation
- A defined scope and reliable asset inventory
- Policies and procedures people can follow
- Clear ownership, escalation, and approval responsibilities
- Risk informed prioritization and response expectations
- Evidence of actions and verification
- Reporting that connects activity to business decisions
Use the same cycle consistently: Assess, Prioritize, Remediate, and Monitor. Improve the program as your organization learns.
